Homebrew kit with Sony-DSC P41 camera

It has always been a desire for me to make my own trail cameras with a removable camera so that I can take advantage of some of the many features that are offered with small digital cameras that may not be offered with off the shelf units. This led me to make a small trail cam using components from Whitetail Supply in the US. The camera I chose was a Sony DSC P41 camera that I had bought second hand and one that is rated highly among those that make homebrew setups exclusively.

The finished product is tiny in comparison to some of the traditional trail cameras on the market. This would make it far easier to hide from those who may wish to make it their own if you need to put it in a fairly popular place.

The internal "heart" of the whole system is the fantastic XLP board that has many features including:

  • Multiple time delay selections
  • Stealth Mode ( Ideal for scrapes and wallows)
  • Burst Mode ( As many pics as it can take in 20 seconds)
  • Instant Mode ( Ideal for trail monitoring)
  • Video

The sensitivity is fine enough to catch sparrow sized birds steal grain but I have noted very few missed shots using this system. In an effort to get some good shots from this camera, I positioned a post on the channel bank where the Wood Ducks come out to feed. With a little bit of grain to bring them right up to the camera, I was able to get some better than average photos. I managed to keep the camera low enough to the ground so as to get a ducks eye view so to speak.
